From the Painted Desert to California’s Sahara

After leaving Petrified Rocks National Park, we headed to Phoenix. The mountainous terrain en route reminded me of Colorado, as did the highway’s steep inclines. Before descending into Phoenix, we enjoyed a cool, refreshing night at Camp Verde.

One of the greatest treats of being on the road is reconnecting with family and friends.  During our three days in Phoenix, we engaged in joyful conversations with 8 dear relatives.

Then we set out for Yuma in southwest Arizona. At the Escapees park near the orange groves south of town, we opted for a site alongside the pool. As soon as the RV was set up, we plunged into the refreshing water, then soaked in the hot tub. The huge dog play area delighted Sonha. With warm days, cool nights and a pool to play in, our day and two nights there felt like a retreat.

Our final destination lay 90 miles west in southern California. The extraordinary sight of the Imperial Sand Dunes greeted us shortly after crossing the state line.  We stopped at the only place available — a rest stop in the Interstate 8  medial strip. As the wind blew, fine grains of white sand danced atop the mounds. That was just the start of a fascinating ride into California.
