We ventured over the Cascades for a camping trip along the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway and in Crater Lake National Park. Sonya made new best friends forever (BFFs), hiked on national forest trails, picnicked in the snow and discovered a new treat — watermelon.

Snow picnic

Crater Lake National Park had a record winter snow of 673 inches and much of it still covers the ground. We found a picnic table in the midst of a snow-covered slope to enjoy our lunch. Photo credit: Rose Muenker

The sights were extraordinary but the sweet family we met from Eugene, Oregon, made our trip extra fun and memorable.
