Low Tide Reveals Marine Treasures

Starfish

This morning had a negative low tide, which for lay people means it’s the best time for shell fishing and gazing into tidal pools.  We plan to get shell fishing licenses to gather bountiful meals of mussels and clams, so we  set out early today under a cloudless blue sky to scout out potential shell fishing locations.

Today’s destination was Lone Ranch Beach. My experience with tidal pools was in the tropics. They contained miniature oceanic worlds of tiny fishes, crabs and plants. The tidal pools here offered a different beauty. To my delight, shiny orange and burgundy starfish (sea stars) and bright green sea anemones hugged the rocks. As many as a dozen large starfish lined up side by side.

Conversing with a guy who was shell fishing, we learned about the different types of clams found on the southern Oregon Coast, how to harvest mussels, and the helpful resources available on the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife website. He advised us to call the ODFW shellfish safety hotline before heading out to collect mussels or clams. It’s amazing the wealth of information people eagerly share when asked a question about a subject they’re passionate about!

Mussels are abundant! Yum! With a daily limit of 72 per license holder, we can plan on many delicious meals.

Rainy Day Turns Sunny

After a steady rain, the sun reappeared late afternoon, bringing smiles to our faces. We’ve quickly learned to take advantage of the windows of good weather and head to the beach. Today we went twice — when the sun first came out and again after dinner for the 8:30 pm sunset.

To anyone else, the seal in this photo looks like a black dot in the waves. But I know that it’s the seal that loves to tease me by popping up its head and then disappearing underwater. It likes to surf in the high tide waters rippling into the mouth of Hunter Creek. And it seems to be as curious about us as I am about it.

Moments like these make life here special!

Southern Oregon Coast Becomes Our Summer Home

Turtle Rock, Gold Beach, OR

After 1,250 miles in the RV…832 miles exploring in the car…19 days…4 national parks… countless glorious views of mountains, waterfalls, giant trees and dazzling flowers, we’ve arrived at our destination at Gold Beach, Oregon!

We were charmed with superb weather and a safe, incident-free journey. We’re especially grateful to you dear friends who gave us moral support, generous gifts and loving hospitality to ease our travels. Thank you!

Turtle Rock Resort, our summer home, sits at the mouth of Hunter Creek just a short walk to an expansive, sandy beach strewn with colorful rocks and drift wood.

We’ve discovered that the wind dies down in the early morning and at sunset, so we start and end our days with walks on the beach with our dog, Sonya.

I wear several layers of clothing during our beach walks but perhaps I’ll eventually get acclimated enough to go with fewer layers!

During an exploratory trip into town, we scoped out the seafood shop, the outdoor clothing store and the two grocery stores.

Another day we’ll explore the local bookstore and library. We like it here!
